MALAMA HONUA MALA

The Mālama Honua Mala takes its name from the voyage of the Hōkūle‘a. Malama is an essential part of my name here, of my mala endeavor, and while Malamalama means Light and Knowledge, malama taken alone means “to care for.” Mālama Honua can be translated as “to care for our Island Earth” - meaning in a broader sense to take care of and protect everything that makes up our world: land, oceans, living beings, our cultures, our selves and our communities. It means to take care of our Earth and her limited resources, as though you were living on an island in the middle of the sea. For these resources are precious and should be honored with respect. In the same vein we must honor our own bodies and mind. For we are our own island, and our resources cannot be used with abandon without learning how to refresh and restore our bodies, mind and spirit. The amazing guru here is a Copper in Chrysocolla and in its beautiful pattern lies the world. It is our teacher and our child for we are given the opportunity to learn if we are open to it, but we must also be its caretaker. Bloodstone fortifies us and gives us strength and vitality. Tiger’s Eye balances our perspective and energizes our passion. Poppy Jasper nurtures the self and others. It brings joy and a peaceful balance. While the Rutilated Quartz here represents the Light within each and every one of us solely and also the bright light of the whole living being that is the one planet that we live on together and share.

I choose to be caretaker of self and others.

The Malama Honua Mala is made with 8 mm Tiger’s Eye, Bloodstone, and Poppy Jasper beads totaling 108 in number. The guru is a stunning Copper in Chrysocolla.  Four Rutilated Quartz marker stones are placed in the Zen style in this piece to gently remind you where you are in your meditation and mantras as well as bring a natural flow to the piece. The mala is hand knotted by me and made with love, light and intention.
